Sports as a social and cultural phenomenon in Trinidad and Tobago acts as a force that creates a sense of unity and a feeling of pride that reinforces nationalism. This was more prevalent than ever, on 16th November 2005 where Trinidad and Tobago Soca Warriors led by skipper Dwight Yorke and Coach Leo Beenhakker defy the odds and made history. When Dennis Lawrence header in the 49th minute clinch Soca Warriors 1-0 victory in Bahrain and to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, Germany 2006.
This made Trinidad and Tobago as the smallest nation by the population to make an appearance at the FIFA World Cup finals in 2006 (replaced by Iceland in 2018) and placed them in Grouped B with Sweden, England and Paraguay. Trinidad and Tobago Soca Warriors can look back at this enormous achievement in their campaign with a gusty draw with Sweden 0-0 on the 10th June 2006 for their first game at the FIFA World Cup tournament, history in the making.
Additionally, the battling defeat by England and Paraguay, Soca Warriors left Germany with dignity, self-accomplishment and a smile on their face to have encountered the elite players in one of the most prestigious sports (soccer) at the FIFA World Cup tournament with fierce competition.
