Phagwa

Phagwa also known as Holi, is a Hindu Spring Festival traditionally symbolising  the “triumph of good over evil.” This religious festival is celebrated annually in the month of March by the Hindu community and enjoyed by Hindus and non-Hindus alike and was introduced to Trinidad by the East Indian indentured labourers around 1845.

Members of the religious institution (Temple), all join together to celebrate by dancing, joyful singing and the spraying of vibrant coloured dye known as “abeer” that foster purification and good health that creates a gleeful and positive atmosphere.

Special folk songs called “Chowtal are sung during the celebration, accompanied by musical instruments such as the Dholak, a hand drum and Majeera or Taal that adds to the infectious and fast-paced music which are enjoyed by all and entice you to participate…….. Phagwa celebrations are held at different venues throughout Trinidad on this auspicious day, where celebrants normally wear white attire that is attributed to peace and where the colors of Phagwa are prominently visible on this white clothing signifying joy. However, its grand celebration is staged at the Aranguez Savannah.

Did you all miss the Phagwa celebration this year because of the COVID-19 lockdown and also do you all think it is a dying tradition in Trinidad?????? Put it in the comment below……. As well as subscribe!!!!!!!!!!
